“Casino” is another example of a true American crime drama, which is clearly when Scorsese is at his very best. Following the drama, violence, corruption, and excess of 1970s Las Vegas, this jaw-dropping true story is expertly acted by longtime Scorsese collaborators Robert De Niro and of course, Joe Pesci. One of the most enduring scenes is one where Pesci’s character is playing blackjack in the casino, trying to hit the jackpot despite being warned against entering the venue. It’s a classic Scorsese chronicle of American greed, excess and unbelievable nerve, one that showcases the best talents of the star-studded cast, a film which quickly established itself as a classic.
