Ranked: Martin Scorsese’s Best Films

Martin Scorsese is without a doubt one of the most influential filmmakers in American and even world history. His films have been seen by virtually everyone, having grossed billions of dollars and earning him the joint titles of being among the highest grossing and most critically acclaimed directors of all time. His films are icons of American culture, exploring themes such as organized crime, the American dream and the relationship between guilt and redemption.

They explore true stories in a way that encapsulates the best moments and worst excesses of American culture, resulting in some of the most re-watchable films ever made. While it may be difficult to rank the creations of this artistic genius, some are definitely better than others. Here are Martin Scorsese’s top films, ranked.

Starting with what is undeniably his magnum opus and most enduring work, Goodfellas regularly tops the rankings of one of the best films of all time. Nominated for six Academy Awards, numerous scenes from the film continue to be quoted, re-enacted and parodied across the global media to this very day, including the iconic scene known as the “funny guy” scene, where Oscar winner Joe Pesci intimidates his fellow gangsters in 1970s New York with his sinister brand of humor. Goodfellas is undoubtedly a film for the ages.

“Casino” is another example of a true American crime drama, which is clearly when Scorsese is at his very best. Following the drama, violence, corruption, and excess of 1970s Las Vegas, this jaw-dropping true story is expertly acted by longtime Scorsese collaborators Robert De Niro and of course, Joe Pesci. One of the most enduring scenes is one where Pesci’s character is playing blackjack in the casino, trying to hit the jackpot despite being warned against entering the venue. Casino table games have long enjoyed a dramatic pedigree in cinema, being the background to of many tense, heart-racing scenes. These days, players prefer to experience the high-energy of games such as poker, baccarat, and blackjack table online, where they can also play against real dealers through live casino games.

This film, starring Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio, is the one which finally bagged Scorsese the coveted Best Director award at the Oscars, and for good reason. The film is a tension-filled tale of double-crossing and brutality in modern-day Boston, as FBI agents and mod bosses go head-to-head for control over the city. The ending is one of the best scenes in cinematic history, so we won’t give you any spoilers here.

Another collaboration with DiCaprio, the Wolf of Wall Street follows the true story of corrupt stockbroker Jordan Belford, who made hundreds of millions from now-defunct penny stocks. It’s a classic Scorsese chronicle of American greed, excess and unbelievable nerve, one that showcases the best talents of the star-studded cast, a film which quickly established itself as a classic. If you disagree with this ranking or believe that a film is missing that deserves to be on this list, let us know in the comments below!
