Movie Review: “When Marnie Was There” Is A Tender And Touching Love Story

[yasr_overall_rating]

A young girl is sent to the country for health reasons, where she meets an unlikely friend in the form of Marnie, a young girl with flowing blonde hair. As the friendship unravels it is possible that Marnie has closer ties to the protagonist than we might expect.

“When Marnie was There” is a beautifully crafted tale about a young girl crippled with depression and self-loathing. She has a secret that compels her to determinably sullen, hiding her emotions by wearing her ‘ordinary face’ much to the bewilderment of her loving guardian.

Auntie loves Anna and deeply wants her to be happy and healthy. She sends Anna to the country to recoup from an asthma attack in hopes the she will also find happiness. Enter the jovial couple that houses Anna. They portray a comfortable, older married couple with sarcastic quips toward one another that just adds so much fun to this film.

Anna quickly makes a new friend, Marnie. It was exciting trying to figure out the nature of their relationship. This film has its dark and sad moments that may get overlooked by a younger audience or overwhelm them. Either way, the happy, yet emotional, ending is worth enduring those unhappy moments which are necessary to tell the story of Marnie and Anna.

I loved this film! Anybody that enjoys a love story that has a beautiful and unique twist at the end (that I never saw coming) will appreciate “When Marnie was There.”

Opens Friday, June 5th at the Angelika Film Centers in Dallas and Plano
