Movie Review: “Weapons” Is The Best Thriller Of The Year

When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanishes on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

From director Zach Cregger, who gave us 2022’s hit horror “Barbarian,” comes “Weapons,” an impeccably crafted mystery that blends unforgettable jump scares, bizarre revelations, and killer laughs to give us the best thriller of the year.

Told from many different angles and perspectives, the story feels like a chilling descent into madness. The scares are graphic and haunting, but the film never loses its dark sense of humor. And it all leads to an immensely satisfying ending that audiences will be talking about for years.

Josh Brolin lends gravitas to his performance as a father living through tragedy without falling into cliché, and Julia Garner plays teacher Justine Gandy, who struggles to find the truth. Alden Ehrenreich also stars as young cop Paul Morgan, who walks the tightrope between dark comedy and dread.

Zach Cregger is officially a horror storyteller to be reckoned with. This non-linear story is like a blend of Tarantino and Stephen King. It treads on our deepest fears—alienation and abandonment, all while unraveling a mystery so intriguing and masterfully told, you can’t look away.

“Weapons” pays homage to all kinds of horror classics, from Stephen King’s “IT” to 2021’s “The Black Phone” and even TROMA’s “Beware! Child at Play.” Amy Madigan’s performance as Aunt Gladys is the cold heart of this movie. She’ll be mentioned in the same breath as Pennywise the Clown from now on.

At a time when going to the movies seems like nothing but superhero wasteland or established IP taxidermy, seeing a story this unique is a breath of fresh air. “Weapons” is the best horror movie I’ve seen in years.
