“The Thinning” takes place in a post-apocalyptic future where population control is dictated by a high-school aptitude test. When two students discover the test is smoke and mirrors hiding a larger conspiracy, they must fight the system to expose it and take it down.
If you are like most people you don’t want to drop the money for Youtube Red if you don’t have to. A plethora of creators on the video streaming platform aren’t even involved in the pay-to-play service so there really isn’t that great of an incentive to drain your bank account every month. Well, if Youtube keeps dropping film such as “The Thinning,” the cash might start to flow into the project and it could amass more of a following.
“The Thinning” is introduced like this: The earth is at its breaking point and the people who live on it have had to turn to extreme methods to dispose of 5 percent of the population in order to keep things running smoothly. The United States uses a test administered to students from grades 1 to 12 which determines if you shall live or be a part of the thinning. Blake Redding (Logan Paul) and Laina Michaels ( Peyton List) find that something is amok and attempt to inform the community of the wrongdoing. This film completely blew my mind. Logan Paul was never someone I thought could pull of a role like this. After watching the film, I can’t think of anyone who would have done it better. Peton List does an incredible job too and I would love to see the two work together again on another project. The plot was strong and had no holes, in fact, it kept you watching, on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what the two might uncover next. The film wasn’t cheap nor was it cheesy which is what I had come to expect from the projects that were under the supervision of Youtube Red (Watch “Scare Pewdiepie” and you’ll see what I mean).
This film was one which could have showed in theaters and done very well for its self. Definitely keep an eye on the Youtube Red service and on Logan and Peyton. “The Thinning” is an incredible film and should set the stage for even larger projects.
