Movie Review: The Story Of “Pharma Bro” Is Unbelievable But Somehow Wildly Entertaining

A documentary profiling Martin Shkreli, the financial entrepreneur and pharmaceutical tycoon from Brooklyn, New York, known for raising the price of an AIDS drug 5500% overnight, buying the sole copy of a Wu-Tang Clan album for $2 million dollars and being convicted of securities fraud. The most hated man in America, Martin Shkreli is Pharma Bro.

This documentary follows the story of Martin Shkreli, a former hedge fund manager turned Pharmaceutical business owner who began price gauging the drug Daraprim. An anti-parasite medication used by many patients with HIV and Cancer went from $7.50 a tablet to $750 in what seemed overnight and the public became outraged as those in need could no longer afford it. Instead of showing compassion and understanding, Shkreli did the opposite, publicly ridiculing those who were less fortunate and enticing the media to challenge him.

Since there was no law to stop him, his game of being an open villain only made him more appealing to others as they couldn’t figure out who the man was behind the seemingly narcissistic behavior. This documentary unravels the mystery that is director Brent Hodge conducting a year-long investigation into Shkreli’s private life. This story is unbelievable but somehow wildly entertaining to watch.
