Former leaders of the “pray the gay away” movement contend with the aftermath unleashed by their actions, while a survivor seeks healing and acceptance from more than a decade of trauma.
It is said that approximately 700,000 people in the US have gone through conversion therapy to rid themselves of homosexuality through their church. “Pray Away,” tells the heartbreaking story of ex-members belonging to Exodus, one of the largest ExGay organizations in the country, promising to abolish homosexuality through the teachings of Christ. As ex-members come forward with stories of emotional pain and trauma they endured while in the program, the truth begins to unveil as prominent members and leaders devoted to the faith reveal they were actually closeted homosexuals living a lie.
This is one of the best documentaries I’ve seen on this issue as it exposes the harmful, dangerous, and shameful behavior of those who hide behind religion to take advantage of one of the most vulnerable and unprotected groups of people. Thankfully, the organization has shut down but the emotional damage to many can never be recovered.
“Pray Away” will make its global launch on Netflix August 3rd
