Movie Review: “Parasites” Is A Bloody Mess

Three friends find themselves lost on Skid Row and are captured by an angry homeless gang.

Summary

When three college students get lost in the bad part of town, a gang of homeless bums swarms around them. After killing two of them and knocking out the third one, they drag the unconscious one to the drain to finish the job. The feeble attempt fails, however, because he wakes up and runs away. They gain speed upon the escapee but he kills every opponent that challenges him. Through many characters met whilst running, he gains knowledge and opportunity to get away from these parasites. Eventually, the prisoner finds himself in a situation that he can’t escape and it gets him killed. The only bum left gets to go free, even though he’s one who led the charge.

Acting/Writing/Screenplay 1/5

When it comes to being believable or likable characters, this movie falls short. While I appreciate the attempt to make gritty and dark undertones, none of these people are truly established. There just seems to be a lot of side characters without rhyme or reason. Sadly, I can say that about the main characters too.

Technical/Settings 2/5

I really dislike the camera movement in this movie. It tends to jiggle and to show off weird angles that don’t establish the shot well. It has a problem getting the viewer immersed and instead plays off like a weird home movie.

Overall 1/5

Not one thing in this movie is enjoyable or likable. Its awkward acting, settings, camerawork, and overall tone do nothing but render it laughable. I couldn’t get into the story, characters, or even the setting and with as many holes as it has, to me that’s rather sad. It’s hard to say why they picked the name “Parasites,” but I believe it’s rather fitting, considering how gross of a film this was. It was obnoxious, rude, and unpleasant to the highest regards.

“Parasites” premieres on Digital HD Tuesday, January 24th
