Movie Review: “My Beautiful Stutter” Is A Powerful Film Embracing The Beauty Of Being Different

The documentary follows five kids who stutter ages 9 to 18, from all over the United States, who after experiencing a lifetime of bullying and stigmatization, meet other children who stutter at an interactive arts-based program, The Stuttering Association for the Young, based in New York City.

This documentary follows the journey of teenagers whose lives are forever changed after joining an arts-based program called SAY (The Stuttering Association for the Young) which not only brings together youths suffering from life challenges that stem from stuttering but builds a community of acceptance, encouragement, and confidence.

This is one of those educational but extremely emotional documentaries that reminds you there are so many youths out there who stutter and suffer in silence, get bullied, and tormented every day just for being different. Stuttering is a communication disorder that affects as many as 70 million people. Children who stutter often hide it out of fear, shame, and embarrassment, concealing their depression and anxiety around public speaking. While some disorders or disabilities aren’t as visible, we should have compassion and understanding for those who have difficulty with the things we deem simple.

This is such an important reminder to have patience with others without judgment because this world is already tough as it is and we are all just trying to be understood and heard.
