Movie Review: “Identifying Features” Is A Strong, Powerful Story With A Shocking Ending

Magdalena, a mother in search of her missing son, meets Miguel, recently deported from the US and looking for his mother. Together, they make their way through the desolate and unforgiving militia-ridden landscapes south of the border.

When Magdalena’s (Mercedes Hernández) son leaves for the border, she never hears from him again. After authorities fail to help her, she sets out on a journey across dangerous land to find him. As many are kidnapped and killed along the border and other parts, those with information are reluctant to reveal any details about what they have witnessed. Finally, a woman gives her the name of a survivor riding the same bus as her son who may have leads to his whereabouts. Hopeful that he is still alive, she tracks down the man who claims the bus was taken over by men who took everyone off and shot victims one by one. As he lay on the ground praying for his life, he remembers seeing her son but is uncertain if he is still alive. She continues on, meets a man named Miguel (David Illescas) who assist each other as they both travel alone in search of their missing family.

Miguel discovers his mother is gone as the home is completely abandoned. Forced to leave, the two escape as dangerous men arrive with guns in the middle of the night. As Miguel is shot dead, Magdalena makes a run for it. As she trips, she turns to look the killer in the eyes. What happens next will shock you leaving you speechless. Director Fernanda Valadez did a fabulous job of truly capturing powerful emotions that stay with you well after the movie has ended. This is her first feature film with an amazing cast, definitely a job well done.
