Movie Review: I Found My Forgotten Childhood Within “Christopher Robin”

[yasr_overall_rating]

A working-class family man, Christopher Robin, encounters his childhood friend Winnie-the-Pooh, who helps him to rediscover the joys of life.

“Christopher Robin” follows Christopher through his journey of rediscovering what is truly important to him. While at the same time remembering his childhood and how to have fun again.

If you grew up being a part of Winnie the Pooh and his group of friends, then I imagine you’ll feel yourself in Christopher Robin’s shoes. I did not grow up on Winnie the Pooh so I was a bit skeptical. I find that this film can relate to all ages, from the child that just wants to play and still carries the youthful spirit, all the way to the adult that may have forgotten to have fun or are too caught up in things we deem as important. I definitely found myself in the adult category for this viewing.

Christopher Robin is a married father that works for a luggage company that can seem to get away from his work ever since being taken off to boarding school as a kid. Ever since he was taken away from this world of having fun, he could not find it again. It ended up finding him, by some way of divine intervention. Winnie the Pooh ends up finding Christopher Robin, asking for help to find his friends. Whether it is perceived as an on the nose or subtle metaphor, it is a great one for this story in particular.

I found myself getting emotional at moments that were both intentionally emotional and unintentional. The film hits that, so I cannot imagine what people that grew up on Pooh will be going through during this. If I could lend any advice it would be, bring tissues. This is one those films that makes you reflect or remember things from growing up, to who you are now. I find that to be something both special and rare to find in a film.

This film delivers, if you are a fan of Winnie the Pooh, you won’t be disappointed. If you are not a fan, this still has things to love. Maybe you will have an emotional experience, or reflect on your life. Or if you have kids, I am sure they will have a blast with this. If anything, for me, this has at least made me want to go back and watch the cartoon to see how it compares. What can I say? I have been turned into a fan.

In theaters Friday, August 3rd
