A pair of business rivals discover that they’re identical twins and decide to swap places in an attempt to trick their divorced parents into getting back together.
Craig (Josh Sharp) and Trevor (Aaron Jackson) are long-lost twin brothers. They unexpectedly meet at work, where they are both top salesmen. They then scheme to get their parents back together like the “Parent Trap,” where they both switch places.
First, I have no idea who decided to greenlight this movie. This story makes no sense, and that may be the point, but I can only ask why. I have no idea how this film got these calibers of actors to star in it. I enjoy Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang on a typical day, but this isn’t the film I’d like to see them in.
I usually enjoy musicals, but the song and dance numbers in the film left me wanting. It feels like they decided to turn this film into a musical because they didn’t have enough material to make a feature-length film. There’s really not much else to the plot than what I described in the synopsis.
This film is pretty raunchy at one point and is full of jokes and innuendos about sex and dicks, though the title should have clued you into that. The humor is just too weird for my taste. It is both juvenile and outrageous. An example would be Nathan Lane’s sewer boys. Two small ugly creatures with fangs that used to live in the sewers are now kept as his pets. Mullally speaks with a weird lisp and is stuck in a wheelchair. Bowen Yang plays God, which is fun, but God does not play a big part in this story. I did like his outfits, though. Megan Thee Stallion also has a small supporting role; hers is the only musical number I liked.
The only thing I found funny in this film is that Sharp and Jackson are supposed to be identical twins, yet they do not look alike. If you want to see an absurdist comedy with queer themes, I suggest checking out “Bottoms,” which I also wasn’t a big fan of, but I at least found it watchable and thought it was funnier than this. I honestly wish I could erase “Dicks: The Musical” from my brain.
