Movie Review: “Born To Be” Not Only Educates But Offers Compassion And Understanding

The emotional and physical journey of surgical transitioning after New York state passed the law that health insurance should cover transgender-related care and services.

This documentary follows the journey of New York City Plastic Surgeon Dr. Jess Ting, who specializes in transgender reassignment surgery. As many are ignorant to the struggles of those living with gender dysphoria or related psychological issues, this amazing physician has dedicated his career to changing lives through his work. Revealing the lack of knowledge in the medical field regarding transgender health issues, it’s beautiful to see that many healthcare professionals are open to being educated and even trained in surgical procedures.

As many transgender people are denied healthcare, we still have a long way to go in understanding that it’s a basic human right for everyone. I thought this film did an excellent job of showing such compassion and understanding for the LGBTQ+ community and allowing us into the personal world of Dr. Jess Ting and so many of his patients who were open and vulnerable about their personal struggles. I really enjoyed this documentary, it’s a beautiful piece of work.
