Movie Review: “Billy The Kid” Is One Of The Most Beautiful And Captivating Coming-Of-Age Stories I’ve Seen

Billy’s intuitive commentary and intimate verite footage reveal a unique attitude as he responds to a painful childhood, first-time love, and his experience as an outsider in small-town Maine.

This documentary recounts the story of a teenager’s journey, navigating through the ups and downs of a life filled with disappointments, past trauma, first love, and heartbreak. As somewhat of an outsider and non-conformist, Billy’s private world fills with imagination and superheroes, easing some of the harsh realities of life while facing others head-on. He opens up, revealing his painful childhood, abandonment issues surrounding his biological father, and relationship with his only friend, his mother Penny.

This film reminded me of the difficulties of adolescence, especially for those who are unique and refuse societal labels. Billy creates his own world where he finds love, support, and allies who accept him for who he is. This is by far the most beautifully captivating coming-of-age story I’ve seen in a long time. It was captured with such care and sensitivity allowing Billy to guide the story openly on his terms. This movie is a true gem and you’re definitely going to enjoy it. Director Jennifer Venditti did a wonderful job catching those raw intimate moments and allowing the story to unfold at its own pace. This is the only film made by Jennifer Venditti, acclaimed casting director of such projects as HBO’s hit show “Euphoria,” Mike Mill’s upcoming feature “C’mon C’mon” starring Joaquin Phoenix, the Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems,” and “Good Time,” “Honey Boy,” “American Honey,” and more.

“Billy the Kid” is now playing in re-release at Virtual Theaters
