Movie Review: Blood Is What The People Want And “The Purge: Election Year” Gives It To Them

[yasr_overall_rating]

Two years after choosing not to kill the man who killed his son, former police sergeant Barnes has become head of security for Senator Charlene Roan, the front runner in the next Presidential election due to her vow to eliminate the Purge.

Two year have passed since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) kept from killing on Purge night despite the death of his son weighing heavily on his mind. It has been 18 years since Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell) had her life spared during Purge night but watched her family die beside her. Charlie is now a senator running for the presidency and her utmost goal is trying to put a stop to The Purge and Leo Barnes is her head of security, doing everything he can to keep her safe during her run and during the night of The Purge where the weak and the poor are eliminated systematically, by both the people and the government in an effort to line their pockets. Through a betrayal, the two are put out on the street left to fend for themselves an along the way meet a deli owner by the name of Joe Dixon (Mykelti Williamson) and Marcos (Joseph Soria) and they all band together to find a way to survive the night and end The Purge.

Just as the storyline suggests, The Purge is on its last leg and is about to be put down for good. If Election year is the series’ last hurrah, they did it in classic Purge fashion. The rough-around-the-edges series has you expecting violence and lots of blood and gore. In “Election Year” they do not disappoint but rather go above and beyond with adding in the dark political satire that surrounds the real world election cycle as well as many more to come. The other two films had a small flaw in which the action and violence were not sustained but rather thrown at you in short intervals with lengthy suspense in-between and while that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, it isn’t what The Purge is all about. The movie does a great job in keeping the action, violence and the suspense stretched out through the entire movie in one continuous trip to hell. “The Purge: Election year,” unlike other films that come in threes, is the best purge yet.

In theaters Friday, July 1st
