“Josephine Baker: The Story Of An Awakening” Movie Review: Even One Of The Most Famous Entertainers Of Our Time Couldn’t Escape Racism

An interesting look at the life and career of Josephine Baker, an American who found fame in Europe, married a white man, and was known for her scandalous singing and dancing. She fell between two cultures in her own country, then turned her back on the segregation and social norms.

Josephine Baker was known as one of the most colorful entertainers of our time, capturing audiences all over the world with her unique style and controversial performances. This film explores her life from the rise to fame along with her fight against racial inequality which led her to activism. Josephine became a breakout star in Paris, performing for primarily white audiences while racism ran rampant in America.

After 20 years away, she returned to America only to be reminded that even with her megastar status, she was still treated just like all the other blacks. Outraged, she decided to take action and become a part of change in America. Refusing to perform any shows where blacks weren’t allowed entry, for the first time her audience was segregated after promoters agreed to her demands. Since then, she began publicly speaking against racist crimes finally using her success to fight for her people.

I thought this was a great film, well put together and informative. I do wish however, there was more footage of intimate interviews especially regarding racism as it pertained to her directly. Other than that, this is a film I definitely recommend.

“Josephine Baker: The Story of An Awakening” will be featured exclusively on the Cinémoi Network beginning on Thursday, October 29th at 7 pm PST / 10 pm EST.
