DVD Review: “Strawberry Shortcake: Dance Berry Dance” Is Fun And Full Of Lessons

Dance along with Strawberry Shortcake and her friends’ adventures!

As you can tell by the name, “Strawberry Shortcake: Dance Berry Dance” is full of dancing. While the millennial version of the old character Strawberry Shortcake may have revamped her looks as the years have passed, prepare to be pleasantly surprised that the show still teaches lessons about friendship. While I am not impressed with the newer look, she looks like a video game character, not a girl obsessed with strawberry treats, I am impressed by the content, even with the addition of technology in the episodes. Speaking of episodes, there are four on this DVD, and they are separated by beginning and end credits, but fail to share the name of each episode in the actual episodes. The back of the case gives titles to three of the four episodes. Someone dropped the ball on this, but the kids really aren’t going to care. Besides, the movie comes with a digital copy, which will be perfect for long road trips this summer when your little one is on the iPad.

On with the show. The first episode was not named, so I have expertly named it ‘Twinberry Surprise,’ because sisters Sweet and Sour are about to celebrate their birthday. Sour, the goth twin, wants just once to be able to have a birthday for herself only. Sweet, the martyr twin, gifts her sister with her own party and because the show focuses on friendship, Sour decides to share in the end. Episode two focused on a girl name Apple, the techie of the group, who wants to be apart of one of the many dances or sports groups but fails to have enough dancing skill. She creates a pair of techno boot capable of dancing for her and wows the crowds until disaster strikes. Next episode labeled ‘Dog Dance No-Show,’ kind of spills the beans in the title because lovable pooch Tom-Tom gets stage fright. The last episode, ‘Dance Puppy Dance,’ is about Cherry, angsty girl with a southern drawl, trying to compose a song for Queen Berry, when she is interrupted by Strawberry and her pals for a song. She created a hit and then can’t get far enough away from the catchy tune to find inspiration for the song she needs for the queen.

As I said before, each episode has a valuable lesson about friendship for your little princess. These particular lessons may be even more valuable to moms as the cartoons focus on giving people space and showing some activities just aren’t going to include everyone. I’m telling you, these episodes were written by a mom who probably hasn’t been able to go to the bathroom by herself in at least three years. Either way, moms will be very thankful she turned her annoyance into cartoons other kids can watch and learn from. Your little girl will probably enjoy the music and try to dance along with the easy to follow moves, while they croon over the strange berries with faces. Strawberry Shortcake wins again with fun plots and strange fruit-based characters.
