DVD Review: “Elena Of Avalor: Realm Of The Jaquins” Is Fantasy-Filled Fun

Join crown princess Elena as she soars through a hidden gateway into Vallestrella, the mysterious, dazzling domain of the jaquins. On the way there, she accidentally releases a mythical forest sprite that could endanger Avalor! Now Elena must find the jaquins’ magical, legendary Sunbird Oracle to save the kingdom!

Little princesses and older princesses (okay, fine, moms like me) will love meeting all the new Guardians of Avalor. For those unfamiliar with the kingdom of Avalor, flying cats called Jaquins guard the kingdom – proof this show was made for gals, lots of cats – who assist Elena in her royal duties. Disney’s newest princess gets a brand new set of flying kitties too but not before some old enemies try to steal the kingdom. Before we get to the rather impressive plot, let’s discuss the details. Your own little princess can enjoy four full episodes and ten shorts in this ninety-minute DVD. Perfect for car rides to Grandma’s.

Spanish Princess Elena thought she had the whole princess thing down pat until circumstances got beyond her one year of experience, this time with the Jaquins. The flying kitties in-training are ready to become full-fledged guardians but first, they have to pass a test to prove they are guardian material. The nefarious Victor and his sidekick Carla, show up to steal the kingdom from Elena with an elaborate plan that includes ruining the Jaquin test. They need Elena out of the area to bring in a mythical forest spirit to ruin Avalor, which they accomplish by sending Elena to Jaquin headquarters to speak on behalf of the Jaquin who failed his test. Don’t worry, the good guys win and it will not scar your little girl for life.

The other episodes are not as in-depth as the two-parter mentioned above but are enjoyable all the same. Elena’s little sister, Isa, baby-sits some Jaquin eggs as the grown-ups go to dig up some grub. Of course, the eggs hatch while Isa is watching them to prove to herself she is not as big a girl as she thought, or ready for princessy responsibilities. The other episode documents Elena shape-shifting into a – you guessed it – Jaquin to leave the castle and protect her people.

Both of my daughters – seven and eleven – fixated on the screen through every episode. They even put the iPad down to watch the show. Take a moment to let that information sink in. I also, loved the show, because let’s face it, grown-up women are just little girls trapped in grown-up bodies wishing they were princesses. No shame, ladies. Sit down with your kiddos and enjoy your fill of crazy-cat-lady and princess time. It’s great training for your gals and comes with a fun plot too.
