Once a poor vagrant, Chen Tiejin has risen through the ranks of the Red Army and is now a brave and experienced company commander. During a dangerous rescue mission, Commander Tiejin and his Red Army troupe are locked in heated battle with the Kuomintang soldiers. Raising his weapon to deliver the final blow, he stops dead – the solider is none other than his brother he lost five years before, now working alongside the enemy. In a time of hardship and war, can brotherly love bridge the divide to find peace?

“Brothers” follows Chen Tiejin, a once poor vagrant, who is now an experienced Captain in the Red Army. While his Red Army is locked into battle with the Kuomintang Army, he faces off against a well-skilled soldier, but before he delivers the death blow, Tiejin realizes the man is his brother. They were separated five years before and now Tiejin has to decide if brotherhood can find peace in the hardship of war.

This is a film that I have never heard of before. I personally chose to go in blind and just watch it, rather than watch a trailer or read reviews on it. I don’t have much of an opinion on it. On the one hand, it has a very interesting visual style and that would have to be my biggest praise of it but beyond that, I didn’t think it was too gripping. The message wasn’t an interesting question or conflict. Had it been done differently, maybe it could have been more engaging and while I wish I had more passionate thoughts on this, sadly, I do not.

If you are someone that likes war films, I think you would probably enjoy this. If you are not huge on war movies, I would just say to pass on it. There is not much happening here, it does have a unique style to it but as far as story goes, nothing too impressive.
