DVD Review: “Big Hero 6 The Series – Back in Action!” Needs To Go Back To The Drawing Board

The adventures continue for tech genius Hiro Hamada and his healthcare companion, the lovable, inflatable Baymax!

My kids and I were excited to try out Disney’s production of the “Big Hero 6” Series. Admittedly, we were initially disappointed because we thought it was a sequel movie and not the series. But that was our mistake. Even so, series are often not as enjoyable as the movies due to the weaker plot lines and the diminished quality of the animation which is a common result of supplying a more frequent demand. And unfortunately, this series was no different.

With the simplistic plot quality of “Teen Titans” and very similar, 2-dimensional animation, “Big Hero 6 The Series” is cheap and as awkwardly annoying as adolescence. It is surprising how significantly animation impacts our emotional cognition and connection to the characters of a non-live action film. The human psyche is incredibly perceptive to the nuance of expression in faces, body language, tone of voice, etc. – even the animation of these qualities. If the quality of animation or voicing changes even slightly, the character can feel entirely different to the normal viewer. This is the jarring experience of this series.

The episodes are entirely too long for how inane and dissatisfying the storylines. The animation, too angular and unfriendly. And the character development too weak and fumbling. In general, the series is of “good enough” quality for kids to enjoy on the Disney channel, but as a purchased DVD to continue the plot of the film through a series, it’s frankly not worth it.

Available on Disney DVD June 26th
