DOC NYC Movie Review: “Shut Up Sona” Is The Perfect Film To Help You Unleash Your Inner Rebel

“Shut up Sona” is a tongue-in-cheek take at a feisty female singer’s unrelenting fight for equal space in modern-day India, a country deeply uncomfortable with her emancipation.

Singer, composer, and lyricist, Sona Mohapatra, has inspired youth with her music and messages of female empowerment going against her cultural norms creating a space to be independent and heard where women are taught to be silent. This film is an inspiring journey of a woman with a powerful voice determined to share her gift with the world and make a mark on her own terms.

As she struggles in a male-dominated industry and culture that deems her a threat, she continues to fight to ensure all women, including female artists, are treated equally to men. Powerful and rebellious, nothing can stop her from being vocal as she is not only a music star but an activist whose work will open many doors in the future.

Having experienced discrimination as one of the first female cinematographers in India, director Deepti Gupta felt the need to express what it means to be a female artist in a deeply patriarchal country. You’re going to love this film, this is her first feature documentary and beautifully done.

“Shut up Sona” recently had its U.S. Premiere at the 2020 DOC NYC Film Festival
