Campaign Documentary “Roseanne For President!” Hits Theaters July 4th Weekend

27 years after her groundbreaking sitcom “Roseanne” became the #1 show on television, the story of Emmy Award-Winning actress and trailblazing comedian Roseanne Barr’s 2012 U.S. presidential campaign is set to hit the big screen. From inside the rabbit hole of Roseanne Barr’s gonzo campaign, “Roseanne For President!” says big things about how the system works by highlighting how it doesn’t and poking vicious fun at big party politics along the way. Having written and created a sitcom that changed the cultural landscape by revolutionizing what Americans think of family, class, race and gender, Roseanne is uniquely qualified to serve the American people. As controversial, original, and funny as ever, Roseanne is the only serious comedian in the race.

Writer, director and long-time Michael Moore collaborator Eric Weinrib directs this surreal dark comedy which is being distributed by IFC and opens in theaters July 1st. Weinrib and crew followed Roseanne’s campaign from its inception and gained access to Roseanne’s home, friends and family, making for a surprisingly intimate documentary. Says Weinrib, “It’s rare that an icon would allow a filmmaker this far behind the curtain. What I discovered took me by surprise and I’m excited for audiences to see a side of Roseanne they didn’t know existed.” When asked about the current election, Barr responded, “I’ll give Trump credit. He’s got his stand-up act down. I see him working his material at his rallies but if he wants to see the difference between a comedian and a clown, he should check out ‘Roseanne for President!’ July 4th weekend.”

Roseanne announced her decision to run for President on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in August of 2011, and exactly one year later won the nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party. She appeared on the ballot in California, Colorado and Florida racking up more than 65,000 votes to place sixth in the U.S. national popular vote. Roseanne’s outsider presidential campaign proves prescient of America’s hunger for outsider candidates like Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. And with 2016 election politics completely off the rails, Roseanne is looking more presidential than ever.

Roseanne Barr is a comedic icon and creator of the #1 television show “Roseanne” that continues to be syndicated throughout the world. Roseanne won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, the Eleanor Roosevelt Prize for Freedom of Speech, three American Comedy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards for “Roseanne” as well as the Humanitas Prize, six People’s Choice Awards, two American Comedy Awards, and a Peabody Award, among others. Roseanne is opening a medical marijuana dispensary in Santa Ana, California, called Roseanne’s Joint.

Award-winning filmmaker Eric Weinrib has collaborated with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore for over a decade on three of the highest grossing documentaries of all time (“Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Sicko,” “Capitalsim: A Love Story”). Weinrib’s award-winning short fiction film, “Jimmy Walks Away,” opened to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. It aired on Showtime Networks and was distributed on “Park City: The Sundance Collection,” a DVD compilation of Sundance Film Festival award-winning shorts. The Village Voice described “Jimmy Walks Away” as a “comic gem.” Most recently, Weinrib produced White Collar Weed and Flint Water Crisis for the Emmy Award-winning documentary series, “VICE” on HBO. Prior to working with Moore, Eric was a staff writer on Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert vehicle, “Strangers With Candy.” “Roseanne For President!” is Weinrib’s first feature film.
