#1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison returns to her beloved Hollows series with ‘The Turn,’ the official prequel to the series that will introduce you to a whole new side of Rachel Morgan’s world as they’ve never seen it before!
I have not yet read any of Kim Harrison’s previous books in this series and wondered if it would reflect on my enjoyment of this story. As it turned out, it stood on its own and was a very enjoyable read. What we have is a world that’s run by the elves, vampires, fairies, and werewolves and don’t forget the pixies! If you are not drawn to the worlds peopled by the ‘others,’ you won’t have bought this book and actually, you would have missed out on a good yarn. The central characters are Felicia Eloytrisk Combri, or Trisk, a genetic engineer and dark elf, Quen, a dark elf like Trisk, Orchid, a pixie desperate to find a mate, and Trenton Kalamack, or Kal, a higher order of elf, and last but not least, the only human around for most of the story, Daniel Plank, a genetic researcher.
To bring the story into focus, the fairy folk are a dying breed. They need children to continue their lineage and it is not happening so research into genetic coding makes this the center of the book. Of course, a lot of cheating and stealing of ideas is all around and a fierce hostility between Trisk and Kal that goes back to their college years is there to keep you wondering why they find each other attractive. It seems that stealing other people’s ideas and hurting a lot of humans in the process is not just the way humans do business, it’s an art, past mastered by the fairy folk as well. A tomato has been developed that can help feed the human population and stave off starvation, then a virus is created to see how much damage, without actually killing everyone, can be done and when the virus goes rogue, thanks to interference from the bad guys, you have a hunt on for Trisk and Kal, as they will be held accountable.
As I said, the story is interesting and the format well structured and I can’t go into too much detail without spoiling the story. Author Kim Harrison has created another world that stands up to scrutiny and at times, makes for very intense reading. She gives you a glimpse into the lives of the world of vampires, werewolves, elves, and pixies. It is a fascinating read that you will thoroughly enjoy.
