A magical, intoxicating debut novel, both intimate and epic, that intertwines the past, present, and future of two lovers bound by the passing of great comets overhead and a coterie of remarkable ancestors.
I am not going to try and make sense of this first novel by Helen Sedgwick, I tried that at the beginning of this extraordinary tale but of course, I failed miserably. So how do I review it? Well, let me put it this way: I am Irish so I believe, I also love astronomy and have spent my fair share of star gazing, I have been in love and out of love, so I just had to let the story take me where it wanted to go.
We have love stories from the 1400s to the present day, and ghosts that ramble in and out of this tale at will as they are tied to the coming of the comets, to be seen by and interact with their human descendants. Sedgwick makes her ghosts very articulate and also leaves you wishing you knew more about them. The entire wonderful yarn revolves around Róisín and Francois who between them, take you on a trip around the known universe, and as I stated earlier, I am not going to pretend I got all of this, but I don’t care, the journey, the people and the ghosts make for a great story and it is very worth while.
Read ‘The Comet Seekers’ and encourage your friends to read it too, it will make for a great discussion topic, along with a roaring fire and a glass or two of wine. Very highly recommended.
