Book Review: ‘Stone Cold Heart’ Is A Slick, Expertly-Woven Whodunit

With her trademark wit and brilliant plotting, author Caz Frear ratchets up the tension and keeps you guessing as she explores the things we keep from our loved ones — and the secrets we’d kill to keep safe in the dark.

This is one good old-fashioned murder mystery, never mind the author trying to take you far afield with this aside and that aside, don’t be waylaid! And hold on tight for a great yarn that eventually, with the help of our two heroes, you will solve.

We have Cat Kinsella and her partner, Luigi Parnell, both detectives with the London Metropolitan Police. They are both very well suited to each other and they are led by their boss, DI Kate Steele, someone you don’t want to cross and I get the distinct feeling that Luigi has a soft spot for her.

We have a lovely young Australian girl who wound up dead after attending a party thrown for her by her boss. As with all murder mysteries, lots of suspects come out of the woodwork and my God can these people lie. You’re also given backstories that have you going around in circles. Of course, the prime suspect is one Joseph Madden, who turns out to be the greatest liar in the history of the written word!

I must confess, author Caz Frear is one hell of a good writer, all of her characters are unbelievably well-drawn. You have to be very careful or Caz will have you dancing to her tune. Both of our protagonists, Cat and Luigi, fit perfectly together and they will have you hanging from a very tall tree branch, wondering how the hell you ever got there.

The dialogue when our two leads interview Joseph Madden, is electrifying, you have been warned. I couldn’t believe the application of their minds to try and trap this guy, they take it in turns and you just hold your breath and wonder what is coming next. Cat has a very dark secret that is alluded to during the story and the book ends with Cat telling her father to deal with the problem.

This, of course, leaves the door open for another book and it’s going to leave a dent in our heroine’s silver armor. Bring it on, I can’t wait. ‘Stone Cold Heart’ is an exceptionally well-told murder mystery that allows for a myriad of twists and turns that will leave your head spinning. This story was constructed so well you are going to enjoy every mile you walk!
