Soon to be a feature film, ‘The Late Bloomer’ is the revealing, harrowing and often funny memoir of a celebrity journalist and former hotshot hockey player who discovers that he has been biochemically infused with a female hormone.
I found this book to be very well-written. Sad, funny, and in its own special way, a genius telling of Ken Baker’s journey from adolescence to a not-happening-puberty. It not only shows the pain of non-development but also the wonderful struggle to attain stardom in the ice hockey arena.
The background of his brother’s failure to live up to his father’s expectations, the constant battle between his mother and father, wanting to succeed at hockey to please his dad, and to achieve some semblance of self worth, never aware that his shortcomings were medical.
Baker’s efforts to get laid were wonderful cameos on how on how not to get laid, to have survived the pain and suffering for all the years he did, and to come out the other end, a wonderful, funny and sexy guy, has to make him not only special but definitely one of a kind. A great read, one for the shelf.
