Blu-ray Review: Trey Songz And “Blood Brother” Are Off-Key

When an ex-con takes murderous revenge against childhood friends whom he believes let him take the fall for a crime they collectively committed, one of the friends, now a cop, risks his life to stop him.

Trey Songz is a famed R&B singer and far from a critically acclaimed actor. I remember seeing him in the latest “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” film and the only thing I was impressed by was he didn’t fit the “Black person always dies first” horror film trope. To be honest, this film didn’t seem appealing to me and upon watching the film, it did not change my mind.

Songz plays Sonny who has to chase down his former friend Jake (Jack Kesy) after he is released from jail for taking the fall for a robbery stint he and Sonny were a part of. The acting in “Blood Brother” is just fall out lethargic and unimpressive. Many times throughout I rolled my eyes at the performances. Many character decisions and motivations are very frustrating and some are only there so the movie doesn’t end in forty minutes. Darcy, China Anne McClain’s character, becomes a target of Jake whose only purpose comes off as to annoy the audience. There is a brief cameo from Fetty Wap that left me shaking my head. The overall story is simple but is too long in the tooth because it is held together by plot holes and horrendous character decisions. “Blood Brother” would have benefited from just being a short film. The technical elements of the film are as pedestrian as it gets and left me with not too much to say for them. The Blu-ray does have some special features that are interesting, especially the behind-the-scenes featurette. Other than that, this just a letdown.

“Blood Brother” is a movie you can judge from its cover. A film that you will forget very soon, don’t bother going out to buy this one.
