Blu-ray Review: Lightning Strikes Twice As “Freakier Friday” Delivers Big Heart And Bigger Laughs

Twenty-two years after Tess and Anna endured an identity crisis, Anna now has a daughter and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might strike twice.

There’s a reason “Freakier Friday” feels like slipping on an old sweater — it’s cozy, familiar, and knows exactly which buttons to push for a good time. This newest entry in the beloved body-swap franchise doesn’t rewrite any rules, but it doesn’t need to: it’s here for the nostalgia, the laughs, and a genuinely sweet take on what it means to be family.

This time around, the twist is a little fresher. Instead of just a mother and daughter swapping bodies, the chaos multiplies: thanks to a magical mishap at a family reunion, three generations — grandmother, mother, and teenage daughter — all end up living each other’s lives. Suddenly, the overworked mom is navigating high school politics, her daughter is juggling PTA meetings and a demanding boss, and grandma, who thought her wild days were behind her, wakes up in the body of a TikTok-obsessed teen.

The movie mines plenty of comedy from the generational gaps. Watching the grandmother try (and fail) to master social media while the teenager negotiates a coffee date using her grandmother’s old-school charm is precisely the kind of energetic, fish-out-of-water humor that fans expect. But underneath the gags, the script finds room for a few honest moments — awkward kitchen confessions, heartfelt apologies, and the slow realization that everyone, regardless of age, is just trying to figure it out.

The core cast carries the movie, with vibrant performances and a chemistry that never feels forced. Their bickering is believable, their eventual understanding earned, and the dynamic between the three feels lived-in. It’s this authenticity, even more than the plot, that gives “Freakier Friday” its heart.

Of course, the movie isn’t perfect. The story sometimes meanders, and there’s no denying that the script leans heavily on formula. A few scenes feel like padding, and the overall style can make it feel more like a made-for-streaming comfort watch than a must-see theatrical event. If you’re hoping for a bold new direction or a meticulously crafted story, you might be disappointed.

Still, “Freakier Friday” delivers on what matters most: it’s funny, heartfelt, and brimming with the kind of nostalgia that makes you want to call your mom (or your grandma). It’s not trying to be groundbreaking — it just wants to make you laugh and maybe tear up a little, and on that front, it succeeds.

Verdict: The plot may be familiar, but the generational twist, lively cast, and genuine warmth make “Freakier Friday” a crowd-pleaser for fans new and old. Sometimes, comfort food is exactly what you need.
