“American Murder: The Family Next Door” Movie Review: A Man Murders His Whole Family And We Never Find Out Why

In 2018, 38-year-old Shanann Watts and her two youngest daughters disappeared in Colorado. With the heartbreaking details emerging, the family’s story made headlines around the world.

This documentary follows the tragic murder of Shanann Watts and her two little girls whose lives were taken by her own husband on August 13th, 2018. After returning home early that morning, Shannan was never seen again and when a close friend noticed she was not responding to calls or messages, they alarmed the police and the investigation began. Her husband Chris Watts was the first suspect in the case and even as he publicly denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of his family’s whereabouts, he ultimately failed a polygraph and finally confessed to the murders.

This documentary could have been so much better but it keeps everything so vague that by the time it ends, you still have no concrete idea of why he murdered his family. I wanted more information, like why he took a polygraph with no lawyer present and what his real feelings were towards his relationship that would push him this far. I was slightly disappointed because I found more information online than I did in the documentary. It was OK but for someone who watches an incredible amount of murder cases, unfortunately, I wasn’t that impressed.

Available to stream on Netflix Wednesday, September 30th
