Alamo Drafthouse Launches “The Big Show” Next-Generation Theater Experience

Just in time for a summer packed with blockbusters that need to be seen and heard in the biggest possible way, Alamo Drafthouse is proud to announce that their 34th location, set to open in Woodbridge, VA this June, will be the first of five markets to feature the company’s new Premium Large Format standard, The Big Show.

The 100% recliner 256 seat theater features a state-of-the-art Barco DP4K-45L Laser projection system optimized for very large screens, transformative Dolby Atmos audio technology, and an auditorium layout where each seat has an incredible view.

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, June 5th at 10 am EST at drafthouse.com/theater/woodbridge for the very first screenings at the Woodbridge location, including The Big Show. The first screenings begin on June 9th, with discounted food and beverage.

In true Alamo Drafthouse fashion, The Big Show auditoriums will all have an over the (big) top look, harking back to ‘the greatest show on Earth’ with circus and haunted house-style posters. Alamo Drafthouse Woodbridge’s The Big Show theater is punctuated by an amazing “monster mouth” doorway designed by acclaimed Austin-based design and fabrication studio, Blue Genie Art Industries.

“We’re so excited to invite our new friends in Woodbridge to step through the monster mouth and have their minds blown by this incredible cinematic experience,” says Alamo Drafthouse DC Area co-owner Anthony Coco. “We’re proud to be the first Alamo to offer The Big Show. What better way to experience a larger-than-life movie like ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom?’”

Alamo Drafthouse’s specs for The Big Show were created to fully immerse each viewer at every screening. Using game-changing Dolby Atmos technology, The Big Show provides a truly immersive, three-dimensional audio experience that uses 54 finely-tuned speakers. Atmos goes beyond something only audio engineers can notice – it’s a complete rethink of film audio that leading directors and sound designers are harnessing to make rich, detailed and powerful experiences.

Using state-of-the-art 4K laser projection systems, The Big Show provides Alamo Drafthouse guests with startlingly clear and vivid images, on the highest quality curved screens that are no less than 66′ wide. Each is carefully and frequently calibrated by Alamo Drafthouse’s most skilled projectionists, with audio-visual quality checks before every show to ensure the best possible filmgoing experience.

“At Alamo Drafthouse we present movies with state-of-the-art image and sound with the primary goal of showing the movie exactly the way the director intended,” says Mark Louis, Director of Presentation for Alamo Drafthouse. “With The Big Show, we add an enormous screen and an even more immersive sound system giving our guests the opportunity to escape to the movies like never before.”

In the next year, at least four Alamo Drafthouse markets will feature The Big Show, including locations in Denton, TX (also set to open this June), Frisco, TX, Woodbury, MN, and St. Louis, MO.
