Brave rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her friend, the fox Nick Wilde, team up again to crack a new case, the most perilous and intricate of their careers.
The first “Zootopia” film is one of my favorite Disney animated films ever (apart from Pixar). It was my first in-person press screening in theaters before becoming a film critic in 2016. It grossed over $1 billion at the box office and took home an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. “Zootopia 2” focuses on the duo of rookie animal cops, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, who are sent on a make-or-break mission by Chief Bogo that has them coming face-to-face with mysterious pit viper Gary De’Snake, whose arrival disrupts the balance of the metropolis. To solve the case while contending with the Zootopia Police Department and other parties, they must go undercover in new parts of town, testing their partnership while dealing with a conspiracy regarding the other reptiles near Zootopia.
The film features the return of Ginnifer Goodwin (ABC’s “Once Upon a Time”) and Jason Bateman (Fox/Netflix’s “Arrested Development”) as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. Idris Elba (BBC’s “Luther”) reprises his role as Chief Bogo, while Disney voice-acting veteran Alan Tudyk and singer Shakira return as Duke Weaselton and Gazelle. Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) joins the cast as Gary De’Snake, a pit viper pursued by Judy and Nick as he tries to help his family. Comedian Fortune Feimster (Fox’s “The Mindy Project”) voices Nibbles Maplestick, a beaver. Most of them did a terrific job, but Ke Huy Quan as Gary De’Snake is a grand show-stealer here in the film.
As you may notice, this film might be worth your time and money because it is an animated sequel produced by Disney. Jared Bush and Byron Howard are the film’s directors. The story is a buddy-cop adventure that introduces new animals and mammals, including sea creatures. The animation is top-notch, and the story and entertainment quality are sharp and exciting. What stands out from the entire film is having incredible new members (including Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Danny Trejo, and Quinta Brunson) joining the sequel, while bringing in some past Disney stars (including Patrick Warburton, Brenda Song, John Leguizamo, Michael J. Fox, Auli’i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, and others) to voice new characters. The music score, composed by returning composer Michael Giacchino, adds raw energy to the sequel, while following the same formula as the original film. The screenplay, adult humor, animal puns, and references are funny, sharp, and wild for audiences of all ages to indulge.
As you may have heard, the film has grossed $1.7 billion at the box office, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the second-highest-grossing animated film (behind “Ne Zha 2”). The main reason Disney chose to make this sequel is that the original 2023 animated film “Wish” was a box-office flop. With the company suffering financial troubles, the studio decided to greenlight this film, as well as “Moana 2” and future FROZEN installments. While it was one of the best sequels Disney has ever made, the original remains a standout among Disney’s animated features. At 108 minutes, Disney’s “Zootopia 2” expands the animal kingdom with strong direction, animation, and voice performances. This sequel is best experienced in theaters and demonstrates the franchise’s global appeal. It is one of those sequels I want to watch over and over, and it is a strong contender for an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. One more thing, please stick around at the end as the post-credits scene hints at a possible third installment.
