4K Ultra HD Review: “Fallout: Season One” Delivers A Thrilling Ride Through A Post-Apocalyptic World

In a future, post-apocalyptic Los Angeles brought about by nuclear decimation, citizens must live in underground bunkers to protect themselves from radiation, mutants, and bandits.

In a post-apocalyptic world, Lucy (Ella Purnell) must leave the only place she’s ever known, an underground vault, and travel to the lawless surface world to rescue her father, Overseer Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLaughlin).

I have never played the video games this show is based on. I knew nothing about the story, but I have heard good things about the show since it premiered last year. Something else that I didn’t realize until the credits for the first episode started rolling is that Jonathan Nolan (of “Westworld” fame) worked on this show.

This season is divided into three storylines. One is what transpires in the vaults, where humans escaped and lived to avoid bombs and radiation poisoning. Next is what happens on the surface, aka “the wasteland,” as Lucy tries to find her father. Lastly, there are flashbacks to Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins) in the 1950s, which show what led to the world becoming like this.

Along with the story divided into three parts, there are three central characters that we follow this season. The first is Lucy. Lucy is a naïve girl who has quite literally been sheltered all of her life. She is forced to defend herself and commit some heinous acts to survive on the surface. She is strong in her morals, but her world is shaken once she realizes just how corrupt human nature can be, especially from those that she loves.

Next is Maximus (Aaron Moten). Maximus is part of the “Brotherhood of Steel,” which is essentially the army equipped with mecha suits. It is his dream to become a “Knight,” someone who pilots a mecha suit. However, he, too, is a bit naïve, or at least, idealistic when it comes to the Brotherhood. He initially believes that the Brotherhood is a righteous cause that helps those in need. But the knight he serves continually mistreats him and doesn’t care to help others. This leads Maximus to impersonate him and find out that the cause he signed up for is not what he initially thought it was.

I have not seen Purnell or Moten in anything before this series, but they both greatly impressed me. They had good camaraderie and chemistry together. Both characters feel distinct in their goals and personalities.

Lastly is Cooper, aka “The Ghoul.” I’m already familiar with Goggins as an actor. And he has had quite the year since this, “The White Lotus,” and the final season of “The Righteous Gemstones” have all come out. I’d say he is one of my favorite characters on the show. He is an actor who often stars in westerns and is coerced into doing commercials and promos for a tech company his wife works for, which is revealed to be the company that is building the vaults. He is still alive two hundred years later, but as a ghoul. He has to take some potion to keep his wits about him, or he’ll turn into a zombie.

Overall, I found this show to be engaging and pretty tightly paced. I also thought the production value of this show was pretty top-notch. “Fallout” reminds me of another Amazon show, “The Boys,” quite a bit. The humor, gore, and tone of the series are very similar. So, if you’re a fan of that show, you will most likely enjoy “Fallout.”

Now that I’m caught up on the first season, I will be eagerly awaiting the next.
