STARZ Digital Acquires Rights To Music Documentary “Miss Sharon Jones!”

Starz Digital announced today the acquisition of all North American distribution rights to Barbara Kopple’s “Miss Sharon Jones!,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and recently played at SXSW, as well as the Sarasota Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. Directed by two-time Academy Award®-winner Barbara Kopple (“Harlan County U.S.A.,” “Shut Up & Sing”), “Miss Sharon Jones!” features the titular Sharon Jones and her band, The Dap-Kings. The film was produced by Kopple and David Cassidy.

Starz Digital will open the movie theatrically on July 29th, followed by a digital, on-demand and home video release this fall. The deal was negotiated by Submarine on behalf of the filmmakers.

Just as her career is hitting its stride, iconic soul diva Sharon Jones faces her greatest challenge yet. This triumphant, music-fuelled crowd-pleaser captures Sharon Jones during the most intense and courageous year of her life, as she battles back from a life-threatening illness to get back to where she belongs – center stage.

Starz Digital’s upcoming releases include Sophie Goodhart’s “My Blind Brother,” starring Adam Scott, Nick Kroll, Jenny Slate and Zoe Kazan and Bob Castrone’s ensemble comedy “Flock of Dudes” with Chris D’Elia, Hannah Simone, Brett Gelman and Kumail Nanjiani and Hannibal Buress.
