“With Drawn Arms” Movie Review: One Gesture At The 1968 Olympic Games Sparked A Movement That Changed The World

Filmmaker Glenn Kaino partners with Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith as he looks back 50 years to the moment that helped define a movement and changed the course of his life forever.

U.S. athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in black gloves on the podium during the national anthem at the Olympic Games in 1968. As a symbol of black pride, power, and unity, the two decided to use their platform to silently speak on behalf of injustice for those who didn’t have a voice. Since then, raised fists have been seen throughout the Black Civil Rights Movement and have remained a representation of power ever since.

Conceptual Artist and filmmaker Glen Kaino became inspired and decided to collaborate with Tommie on an art project that would preserve the powerful history he created. Throughout their process, Tommie was able to connect with athletes who’ve also become activists, like football player Colin Kaepernick whose life changed forever after taking a knee during the American national anthem. Tommie’s story captured the attention of Oprah, President Obama, and the Sr. Director at General Mills who decided to give respect where it’s due and put Tommie on a Wheaties box like other athletes that came after him.

While he has faced many challenges since the ’68 Olympics, Tommie Smith leaves a strong legacy for future generations to create positive changes in this country. This is an amazing documentary, full of hope and inspiration.
