“On The Record” Movie Review: One Of The Music Industry’s Biggest Moguls Is Finally Exposed For Sexual Assault

A former hip-hop executive decides whether to make public her rape by one of the most powerful men in the music industry.

During the past few years, sexual misconduct and assault has finally been called out within the entertainment industry, but only recently has it gained a vast amount of attention in music. ’90s R&B Singer Jaguar Wright took to social media these past few months, aggressively exposing executives for sexual abuse towards female artists and asking the public to stand by her in getting justice. While Clive Davis and Sean Combs appeared to be her main targets, not many were surprised by the allegations, but the public seemed to react in total disbelief when women began to come forward accusing hip hop mogul Russell Simmons of rape.

Simmons, who has been one of the biggest influencers in music, fashion, and even spirituality, made it virtually impossible to convince anyone he would be capable of such violent acts. This documentary accounts the journey of Drew Dixon, a former record executive at Def Jam who reveals she was consistently sexually harassed and eventually raped by Simmons back in 1995. As other women began speaking out after the Harvey Weinstein story broke, Drew felt it was her duty to finally reveal her truth after years of silence. Too afraid to go up against someone so powerful in a male-dominated industry, she and two of his other victims open up with hopes the perpetrator will eventually be brought to justice. An excellent film that should definitely be on your watch list.
