After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
Eight years have passed since the initial release of “Moana,” yet the sequel effortlessly transports viewers back into the world of its beloved characters. “Moana 2” picks up three years after the first film’s conclusion, finding Moana (voiced by Auliʻi Cravalho) settled on the island of Motunui with her family and people. Simultaneously, her friend Maui (Dwayne Johnson), the shape-shifting demigod, is engaged in a quest to free the world from the god Nalo, who has cursed the hidden island of Motufetu, once a unifying force for the ocean’s people. When Moana’s wayfinding ancestors summon her to follow a comet leading to the sunken island of Motufetu, she assembles a crew and embarks on a daring voyage. Along the way, she reunites with Maui, and together they confront the evil god Nalo.
While live-action musicals can be divisive, animated films like “Moana 2” consistently excel in this regard. The movie features an array of catchy and memorable songs, complemented by stunning animation and awe-inspiring set pieces. The returning voice cast, including Dwayne Johnson, Auliʻi Cravalho, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Scherzinger, delivers outstanding performances. However, newcomer Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, voicing Moana’s younger sister Sina, is a delightful standout, bringing charm and cuteness to her role.
At its core, “Moana 2” emphasizes the power of family and friendship in overcoming life’s challenges. Since the first film, Moana has become a confident young woman, embracing the role as her island’s sole Wayfinder and leader. When her grandmother’s spirit charges her with defeating the evil god Nalo to secure her people’s future, Moana hesitates but accepts the responsibility. This quest not only allows her to protect her home but also opens the possibility of encountering new cultures from across the ocean.
As a film highlighting the importance of family and friendship, “Moana 2” perfectly suits the current season. It offers an ideal opportunity to come together with loved ones, share in an exciting adventure, and reflect on the values that unite us. Audiences of all ages will indeed find “Moana 2” an enjoyable and heartwarming cinematic experience.
