Movie Review: “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” Is A Nice Addition To The Family

A Portokalos family secret brings the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding.

Grab the hair rollers and call the family! The long awaited sequel to one of the highest grossing independent movies of all time is finally here. The big fat Greek family is back and louder than ever. Opa!

The awkward but charming star of the first film, Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos), now married with a family of her own, must struggle to find the balance in marriage, in parenthood, and the rest of the big family. The task isn’t so easy when Toula’s parents realize they never officially married. Chaos and upheaval erupt as they rush to seal the deal, and all the while, reigniting their love for each other and for their family.

The sweet introduction of delightful characters, relatable situations and hilarious dialogue makes the first film so unique, following up with a sequel is a daunting challenge. While it doesn’t carry the same charm as the first movie, it’s an entertaining watch for all walks of life. Greek or no Greek, you’ll no doubt find a laugh or two in the film, and the continual smile upon your face may surprise you. Who says a sequel has to be as good as the first anyway?

But as a follow up, it had to keep the interest of an audience who has heard all the jokes, is familiar with all the characters, and is ready for a new adventure. So, how do you keep the story going while still introducing a new plot? I think they did something smart. The foundational storyline of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” took a road many romantic comedies will never travel. And that is, they sought to portray the value of lasting love. And, it was not only refreshing but beautifully portrayed in Toula and Ian’s marriage, as well as their parents’ marriage. So not only do you have the values of family, parenthood, and life balance, but also the power and longevity of love. The first movie is about finding love, the second one is about keeping it going. As a sequel, it ties it all together really nicely.

The introduction of their college-ready daughter, who feels like she could never fit in with the family brought a familiar feel to the film, introducing something new while keeping it within the bounds of the storyline. Will she find love? Will he be Greek? These are all questions that we’re ready to see answered, and I think you’ll be satisfied with how it all turns out.

All in all, it’s a fun watch, and seeing love rededicated on the silver screen is a breath of fresh air. If you’re familiar with the first, you’ll enjoy seeing those charming characters and their day-to-day Greek life. If you haven’t seen the first one, I wouldn’t recommend jumping in with the sequel. By itself, it’s not quite as strong, but held up with the first one, it’s a nice addition.

In theaters March 25th
