Movie Review: “Bathtubs Over Broadway” Is Rub-A-Dub Good

A Late Night comedy writer stumbles upon a hilarious, hidden world of entertainment and finds an unexpected connection to his fellow man. With David Letterman, Chita Rivera, Martin Short, Jello Biafra, and more.

One of the things that always amazes me is the ingenuity with which Broadway shows recycle. When Spider-Man became a musical I thought that was hilarious and the trend would prove as horribly designed as it is in the cinema. Here we are YEARS LATER with such treasures as the Spongebob Musical, Shrek the Musical, and Spiderman: Turn Off the Lights still reign supreme. I’m not a strong theatergoer (I wish I were more often) so it surprised me quite a bit to dive head first into “Bathtubs Over Broadway,” the ultimate amalgamation of broadway recycling.

The joy and glee found in musical performances can never be matched in almost any other material. With a loose narrative throughline, the true passion of this performance is the inventive recycling of corporate musicals. It’s almost shockingly surrealist but delightfully twisted for our viewing pleasure. It’s certainly a gem of a musical with incredible imagination applied to telling the story of this trip through corporate culture landscapes.

The quick and dirty: I enjoyed this musical. I found it to be inventive and more than anything I applaud the creator for taking corporate trash and turning it into gold. I’d recommend plenty of people go see it!

Now playing in select theaters
