Blu-ray Review: “The Original Christmas Specials Collection” Is A Joy To Behold

‘Tis the season to enjoy the timeless holiday classics in “The Original Christmas Specials Collection” featuring five unforgettable stories.

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the magic of “The Original Christmas Specials Collection.” This gorgeous steelbook Blu-ray™ includes the beautifully animated “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town,” “The Little Drummer Boy” featuring iconic “Animagic” stop-motion animation, “Frosty the Snowman,” and “Cricket on the Hearth.”

Growing up in Dublin, Ireland during the ’70s and ’80s, these animated specials would air every year leading up to the festive season and put us in a celebratory mood, and no matter how old we become, unless you’re Ebenezer Scrooge incarnate, they have always had the ability to melt away any stress or anxiety you might be experiencing during the holiday season.

The 1964 classic, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” as well as the 1968 version of “The Little Drummer Boy,” and the 1970 version of “Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town,” all utilized stop-motion animation, and nearly 60 years later, they all hold up, better than ever. Granted, at some point, they will undoubtedly be updated, using today’s modern technology but here’s hoping these originals will always be available to allow younger generations to experience them in their original format.

The 1967 TV movie “Cricket on the Hearth,” and the 1969 TV Special “Frosty the Snowman,” are also included in this collection but they are the only two titles that didn’t use stop-motion, employing the use of traditional animation instead.

With so many TV channels available at our fingertips, there will never be a shortage of Christmas-themed shows, specials, and films but the titles included herein, are amongst some of the originals that inspired the genre. Blu-ray™ unleashes the power of your HDTV and is the best way to watch movies at home, featuring 6X the picture resolution of DVD, exclusive extras, and theater-quality surround sound.
