A young girl who goes through a difficult experience begins to see everyone’s imaginary friends who have been left behind as their real-life friends have grown up.
“IF” is a heartwarming tale that begins with Bea (Cailey Fleming), a young girl grappling with the loss of her mother to cancer. A few years later, as her father (John Krasinski) prepares for heart surgery at the same hospital where her mother passed away, Bea finds herself moving in with her grandmother Margaret (Fiona Shaw). It’s not long before she encounters a mysterious creature on the stairway of her grandmother’s building. Curiosity gets the better of her, and she follows the creature, only to lose track of it. The next day, her world is turned upside down when she sees the creature again, this time accompanied by a man named Cal (Ryan Reynolds).
As events unfold, Bea learns that these creatures are IFs, or Imaginary Friends, companions that bring joy and comfort to children throughout their youth. However, as children grow older and enter their teenage years, they inevitably stop believing in their IFs, causing these magical beings to fade away. Bea, eager to help, offers to introduce the IFs to new children. Along the way, with guidance from her father, who has a refreshing refusal to fully embrace adulthood, Bea rediscovers the importance of family, friendship, and the cherished memories of her own childhood IF.
“IF” beautifully captures the bittersweet threshold between childhood and the early stages of adulthood. It’s a time when we yearn for independence, yet the responsibilities that come with growing up make us nostalgic for the carefree days of our youth. The film serves as a gentle reminder that while we inevitably grow older, we don’t have to abandon the magic and wonder of our childhood.
Director John Krasinski, known for his horror-focused “A Quiet Place” films, showcases his versatility with “IF.” This movie, written and directed with his own daughters in mind, emphasizes the importance of familial bonds and staying connected as we age. The performances are genuinely touching, and Ryan Reynolds shines in a more kid-friendly role. If you’re seeking a film that the whole family can enjoy together, look no further.
