Movie Review: “Tell Me Who I Am” Is One Of The Most Incredible, Shocking And Disturbing Films I’ve Seen In A Long Time

What if every memory that haunts you could be erased? What if something truly horrific had happened to you and the person who loves you most could wipe that from your mind? Would you want them to? This is the ethical dilemma that 18-year-old Marcus Lewis faced when his identical twin Alex awoke after a motorcycle accident and Marcus was the only person he recognized.

Having survived a motorcycle accident, Alex emerges from a coma without any memory and the only person he recognizes is his twin brother Marcus. Relying solely on Marcus to reintroduce him to his life, Alex puts complete trust in his twin brother in order to build a sense of self he lost. Crippled with pain and shame of reliving a dark family secret, Marcus creates for Alex a beautiful tale of a childhood he’s only dreamed of in order to protect his brother from the trauma he still endures. While he accounts stories of family vacations, house parties with Aristocrats, a cool girlfriend and a ton of friends, he hides the most horrific details of what actually happened to both of them.

Alex has a shocking revelation when their parents finally pass away and they are left to clean out the home. He discovers hidden documents and paraphernalia that contradicts the fairy tale life Marcus created for him. In the attic lies a whole room full of toys from their childhood that was kept away from them, letters from military men written to their mother and a hidden room full of sex toys. The most riveting reveal of all is an image of the two boys naked with their heads ripped from the photograph. This prompts Alex to confront Marcus about being sexually abused as a child. In their ’50s, Marcus finally opens up to Alex about their mother and the abuse that lingered until they were 14 years old. Alex is left to rebuild yet another life for the 2nd time and heal from the one that was created for him.

This has to be one of the most disturbing and poignant stories about lies and family secrets that I’ve seen in a long time. The big reveal leaves you with so many questions about morality, forgiveness, and trust. This is definitely a story that lingers with you as you think about all the dirty little lies that are hidden within every family and how we go about healing ourselves.
