David (Colin Farrell) and Sarah (Margot Robbie), both living in New York, first meet at a friend’s wedding. After a brief, lackluster exchange, they part ways, thinking nothing more of it. Their paths cross once more at a burger joint, and when Sarah’s car refuses to start, David steps in and gives her a lift. This seemingly small gesture sets off a series of events that neither could have foreseen.
Director Park Joong Eun—better known as Kogonada—teams up again with Colin Farrell after their successful work on 2021’s “After Yang.” Joined by Margot Robbie, Farrell’s character embarks on a journey with Sarah that spans different eras, blurring the boundaries between past, present, and future.
Unaware of the strange coincidence, both David and Sarah rented the same model of a 1994 Saturn from a peculiar business called “The Car Rental Company,” run by two mysterious, unnamed characters played by Kevin Kline and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Their car features a GPS that is anything but ordinary.
As they drive, the GPS unexpectedly encourages them to set out on a “big, bold, beautiful journey.” Feeling stuck in their everyday routines, they decide to follow its lead. The GPS sends them to a variety of bizarre stops, each marked by solitary doors standing in empty landscapes. Though hesitant at first, David and Sarah step through these doors, finding themselves face-to-face with defining moments from their own lives—childhood events, teenage memories, and even scenes glimpsed through the eyes of their parents. By reliving and reassessing these memories, they begin to unravel the roots of their disappointments and emotional obstacles.
In less skilled hands, “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” could have come off as clichéd or heavy-handed. Instead, Kogonada crafts an intimate portrait of his protagonists, letting them grow through encounters with their younger selves, loved ones, and old flames. The story’s central idea—giving its leads the chance to revisit and reinterpret their histories—feels both genuine and insightful.
Farrell and Robbie deliver nuanced performances, making David and Sarah feel authentic and easy to root for. Despite the characters’ shortcomings and insecurities, the actors’ portrayals ensure they remain sympathetic and engaging. The film eschews flashy theatrics, opting for a gentle and honest approach that encourages viewers to reflect rather than simply watch. “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” moves beyond the standard love story, offering a quiet but hopeful exploration of memory, empathy, and the capacity for personal growth—a timely tale for uncertain moments.
