New York, NY – July 26, 2024 – IFC Films and Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, announced today that they have acquired the North American rights to E.L. Katz’s (“Cheap Thrills”) action horror thriller “Azrael” starring Samara Weaving (“Ready or Not”) and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (“Femme”). The film world premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival and will have its Canadian premiere at the 2024 Fantasia International Film Festival. IFC Films acquired “Azrael” from Republic Pictures and will distribute the film exclusively in theaters on September 27th, before its Shudder debut later this year.
In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil that resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale from the visionary minds of Simon Barrett and E.L. Katz.
“‘Azrael’ is a chilling, heart-pounding experience that will grab at your senses from start to finish,” says Shudder’s SVP of Acquisitions and Production, Emily Gotto. “We are thrilled to work with these bold and innovative filmmakers to bring E.L. Katz’s distinct vision to theaters and to Shudder later this year.”
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have ‘Azrael’ released by our good friends at IFC Films/Shudder,” said director E.L Katz. “Their support of wild, uncompromising genre films is unparalleled. We are so excited to invite all horror fans along for this mysterious, gruesome, hellish, Samara Weaving ass-kicking marathon.”
“Azrael” is produced by Dan Kagan (“Longlegs,” “Significant Other”), Dave Caplan (“Longlegs,” “Babylon”), and Simon Barrett. C2 Motion Picture Group fully financed the film. North Five Six will handle ongoing international sales on behalf of the film.
The deal was negotiated by Emily Gotto on behalf of IFC Films and Shudder and Laura Sher on behalf of Republic Pictures.
