New York, NY – July 10, 2023 – Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is proud to announce “Alamo’s Big Adventure,” a series of summer screenings of the classic Tim Burton comedy, “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.” The screenings will be held alongside a tour kicking off August 5th with an exact replica of the bike on site in Downtown Los Angeles, Staten Island, and Brooklyn before landing in its permanent home “in the basement of the Alamo” in Lower Manhattan. Each screening will feature photo ops with the bike, souvenir red bowties, and miniature replicas of Pee-Wee’s “missing bike” poster. On August 9th, the 38th anniversary of the film, the bike will be unveiled at Alamo Drafthouse Lower Manhattan with screenings, a party in The Press Room bar, and live-printed posters on the antique letterpress. “There might not be a basement in the Alamo, but there is an Alamo in the basement,” says Alamo Drafthouse founder and executive chairman Tim League. “We’re thrilled to have Pee-Wee’s bike on permanent display appropriately at our only subterranean cinema.”
“Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure,” starring Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman premiered in theaters on August 9th, 1985, and quickly became a cult classic. Directed by Tim Burton and co-written by Reubens and Phil Hartman, the film centers on Pee-Wee’s modified Schwinn cruiser, which is stolen and sets our hero on a journey from the Alamo in Texas to the Cabazon Dinosaurs in California and finally to Hollywood. Likewise, the Alamo Drafthouse’s Pee-Wee bike replica will make a cross-country journey before coming home.
From July 14th – 18th, the bike will be on display at Alamo Drafthouse Downtown Los Angeles, not far from where it was crafted by Hollywood prop maker Ray Galluccio, in conjunction with screenings each day. It will make its cross-country journey to New York City for screenings in Staten Island on August 5th, Brooklyn on August 7th, and the big homecoming event in Lower Manhattan on August 9th.
